Volume two of the Schubertreise presents a mixed programme that reveals many connections - not least, the relationship between father and daughter (the latter nineteen at the time of these recordings).

Late Chopin takes centre stage: his Sonata in g, opus 65 is his `winter journey` and contains echoes of Schubert`s great song cycle. The Dutch composer Jan Vriend was directly inspired to write JOY (2011) by a performance that the Lisney Duo gave of this sonata; Vriend, celebrating his seventy fifth birthday in 2013, is a lifelong devotee of the Polish composer and this work is visited (briefly) by both Chopin and Beethoven.

2013 is the centenary of Witold Lutoslawski – and his Grave for violoncello and piano has become a modern classic. Written in memoriam Stefan Jarocinski, an authority on the music of Debussy, it takes as its starting point a motif from the forest scene in Pelléas et Mélisande.  Debussy`s Estampes remain fresh and innovative: a whirlwind tour through Asia, Iberia and back home to France.

Finally, Franz Schubert`s Fantasy in C continues to divide the academics as to its authenticity but there is no denying its romantic, brillante writing to those who appreciate the wide stylistic range of the Viennese composer.
